Every CHUK course carries exactly one Extra (§9) - a Distance Handling Box, a set of Bonus Boxes, or Challenge Lines. It is the part of the CHUK Rules & Regulations · 2026 that most often gets laid out by eye and then measured properly at the worst possible moment. Here is what each one actually requires.
A box on the floor the handler must stay inside while the dog works away from them (§9.1). It starts at Intermediate - below that, there is no DHB at all. The box is between 1 and 16 m²; from Advanced upwards it may run to 64 m², up to 8 m a side, which is what makes the top-level box a genuinely different handling problem rather than a bigger square.
A supercharge box - the inner box that raises the reward - may be at most 4 m a side (§9.4), and sits inside the DHB it belongs to.
Same footprint rule, different purpose: 1–16 m² (§9.2), placed so the handler has a real decision about whether to attempt the bonus at all. Unlike the DHB there is no level floor - a Bonus Box is legal from the bottom of the ladder.
Always 3 lines across the ring (§9.3), and not available at Masters. Both the start and the finish must sit within the outer third of the ring - within 1/3 of its size - so the lines are crossed rather than skirted.
| EXTRA | SIZE | LEVELS | REF |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distance Handling Box | 1–16 m² (64 m² from Advanced) | Intermediate and up | §9.1 |
| Bonus Boxes | 1–16 m² | All | §9.2 |
| Challenge Lines | 3 lines across the ring | All except Masters | §9.3 |
An Extra does not excuse the ordinary course-design limits around it: gaps stay in the 6–10 m band (§8.5), faces stay within 45° (§8.4), equipment stands 3 m clear of a wall, and the dog still may not be sent straight back to Hoop, Tunnel, Chute, Mat (§8.4). A box drawn over a gap that was already short is two faults, not one.
